Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has voiced his concerns about former U.S. President Donald Trump’s stance on international affairs. Lula stated that while Trump was elected to govern the United States, he was not chosen to “rule the world.”
“I respect the election of President Trump who was elected by the American people to govern the United States,” Lula said. However, he added, “he was not elected to rule the world.”
Lula’s remarks come in response to Trump’s recent statements regarding the Gaza Strip. Trump suggested that the United States would take ownership of the territory and redevelop it after relocating Palestinians elsewhere.
The Brazilian president took issue with this approach, noting that the U.S. leader should maintain “democratic and civilised” relations with the rest of the world.
Lula also criticized the broader role the United States plays in global affairs. He expressed concern that the U.S. continues to promote itself as the “symbol of democracy” while acting as a “sheriff” of the world. He noted that Trump’s statements about occupying certain countries and territories could be seen as “provocations.”
The Brazilian leader has long been an advocate for diplomacy and multilateralism. He has previously pushed for a more balanced global order where countries work together rather than one nation attempting to impose its will on others.
