You Won’t ‘Labour’ in Vain, Akpabio Tells Edo Senator Who Dumps LP for APC

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has welcomed Senator Neda Imasuen into the ruling All Progressives Congress after the lawmaker left the Labour Party due to internal issues.

Senator Imasuen, who represents Edo South Senatorial District, made his defection public on June 12 during a political gathering in Benin City. In a letter addressed to the Senate and read during Tuesday’s plenary, he explained that his decision came after deep consultations with his constituents and political allies.

According to the letter, “This decision follows extensive consultations with my constituents, political stakeholders and supporters across Edo South Senatorial District, who have expressed their desire to have me enter a party that will give our people national prominence and political relevance.”

Imasuen also noted that his move to the APC fits with his support for President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda. He said joining the ruling party would allow him to better represent the interests of his district and contribute more meaningfully to national development through his role in the Senate.

The defection drew attention during the plenary session, with several APC lawmakers warmly receiving the senator. Senate President Akpabio, while reacting, made a remark that got laughter and applause from his colleagues. He said, “Distinguished Senator Neda Imasuen, you shall no longer ‘Labour’ in vain. Your defection has been well documented. You may now graciously move to your new party. Kindly approach the chair for a handshake.”

Imasuen, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions, said his decision was not made lightly. He noted that the internal disagreements in the Labour Party made it difficult to continue working effectively under its platform.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele also stood up to greet the new APC member, noting the importance of unity and cooperation. He congratulated Imasuen and encouraged him to work hard for both the party and the progress of the country.
