The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed an immediate manhunt for the sponsors behind the violent activities of the banned Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, following a deadly clash that led to the death of two police officers. This violent confrontation occurred at Wuse Market, one of the busiest markets in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
The clash also resulted in the death of a civilian trader, and several police vehicles were destroyed, with at least three set on fire. The unrest left the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, deeply troubled by the loss of his men. He vowed that the police force would relentlessly pursue those responsible for these violent acts.
Speaking through the police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Egbetokun condemned the killings, stating, “The unprovoked killings of police officers in the line of duty are highly outrageous and unacceptable as those who murdered these policemen have murdered peace.”
The police chief also stressed that investigations are ongoing, with the aim of revealing the full extent of the incident and ensuring that such attacks on police officers do not happen again. He added that 97 suspects have been arrested so far in connection with the violence and that efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice are underway.
In a statement, the Inspector-General extended his condolences to the grieving families of the fallen officers and expressed hope for a swift recovery for those still receiving medical treatment due to the clash. He further urged the public to cooperate with the police in maintaining law and order, especially in the face of extremist threats across the country.
The statement added, “The IGP offers heartfelt sympathies to the grieving families of the fallen police officers, mourning their loss alongside them and also wishes a speedy recovery to those currently undergoing treatment, hoping for their swift return to full health.
“The NPF, therefore, seeks the support and understanding of the general public in its quest to maintain law and order even in the face of extremist threats and other forms of violent crimes across the country.”
