The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced a strict ban on the use of firecrackers, commonly known as knockouts, during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. The decision aims to ensure public safety and prevent potential hazards during the festive season.
In a statement released by SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer, the command explained that the ban is part of efforts to protect lives and property.
Quoting the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, she stated, “The use of these items can lead to unnecessary panic and anxiety within the community. Additionally, they present significant risks, including fire hazards and other preventable incidents.”
The police emphasized that anyone caught selling or using firecrackers will face arrest and prosecution under existing laws. Community leaders and residents have been urged to educate others about the dangers of fireworks and to comply with the directive.
