Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected calls for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing war with Russia, insisting that security guarantees must come first. He stated that ending the conflict without such assurances would be a “failure for everyone.”
Zelenskyy shared his stance while addressing journalists after a high-level meeting with over a dozen European leaders. The discussion centered on the growing calls for peace and the need for concrete measures to ensure Ukraine’s long-term security.
Speaking to reporters, Zelenskyy stated, “We must be open.” He further noted, “If you don’t have an end to the war and you don’t have security guarantees, no one is able to control a ceasefire.”
The Ukrainian leader’s comments follow a tense encounter with former U.S. President Donald Trump during a recent visit to the White House. Reports indicate that Trump criticized Zelenskyy during their meeting, urging him to be more “thankful” for U.S. support. Trump reportedly told him, “You’re in no position to dictate what we’re going to feel.” He also pressured Zelenskyy to either “make a deal” with Russia “or we’re out.”
Despite this exchange, Zelenskyy continues to receive significant backing from European and other international allies. His meeting with European Union (EU) leaders reaffirmed Ukraine’s strategic importance and the ongoing commitment of Western nations to support the country in its fight against Russian aggression.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy later wrote on X that Ukraine is prepared to sign a minerals agreement with the United States. This deal could strengthen economic ties between the two nations, particularly in the area of critical minerals essential for technology and defense industries.
