“I Was Caught Off Guard” – Pep Guardiola Clarifies Controversial ‘Self-Harm’ Comment

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has clarified remarks he made during a press conference after Tuesday’s dramatic 3-3 draw against Feyenoord in the Champions League. The match, held at the Etihad Stadium, saw City squander a 3-0 lead, extending their winless streak to six games across all competitions.

During the press conference, reporters noticed a scratch on Guardiola’s nose and asked him about it. The Spaniard explained that the injury was caused by his fingernail and jokingly added, “I want to harm myself.”

His comment, intended as a lighthearted remark, sparked criticism from some who felt it trivialized the serious issue of self-harm.

Responding to the backlash on Wednesday, Guardiola released a statement on social media, emphasizing that he did not mean to offend or downplay mental health struggles.

“I was caught off guard with a question at the end of the press conference last night about a scratch on my face,” he wrote. “My answer was in no way intended to make light of the very serious issue of self-harm.”

Guardiola also used the opportunity to highlight mental health awareness. He urged anyone struggling to seek support and provided the contact information for the Samaritans hotline.

“Many people face mental health challenges every day, and I want to help bring attention to resources that can make a difference,” he added.

The incident follows a frustrating period for Guardiola and his team, as defensive errors and a loss of form continue to plague Manchester City. Tuesday’s game included a costly mistake by defender Josko Gvardiol, which allowed Feyenoord to mount their comeback.
