The reinstated Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, is still fighting a legal battle over the circumstances that led to his removal. Obasa, who was ousted by 35 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, has taken the matter to the Ikeja High Court, arguing that his removal was unfair.
At the latest court session before Justice Yetunde Pinheiro, the case was adjourned to Monday, March 10, 2025. The court will review all pending applications, including Obasa’s originating summons, which challenges the legality of his removal.
Obasa’s lawyer, Afolabi Fasanu, SAN, stated that even though his client has been reinstated as Speaker, the case is still important. He argued that the allegations against Obasa—fraud, high-handedness, abuse of office, and gross misconduct—were not properly investigated, and his removal was carried out without giving him a fair hearing.
On the other side, Romeo Michael, who represents the 34 lawmakers named as defendants, maintained that their counterclaim remains valid.
He pointed out that even if Obasa decides to withdraw his lawsuit, the lawmakers still want the court to confirm that his removal followed due process. They argue that their actions were in line with Section 92 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, rather than just being based on the rules of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
