Alaafin Owoade Vows To Reclaim Oyo Artefacts Stolen In 1895

The Alaafin of Oyo-elect, Oba Akeem Owoade, has expressed his determination to recover artefacts taken from the Oyo Kingdom by the British in 1895.

A statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, on Tuesday, confirmed the monarch’s commitment to ensuring the artefacts are returned to their rightful place. “Oba Owoade would make sure that the artefacts taken away by the British in 1895 are brought back with some payments,” the statement read.

Nigeria has recently made progress in reclaiming its stolen heritage, as seen in the successful return of Benin artefacts looted during the 1897 British expedition. These artefacts, which hold deep cultural and spiritual significance, were repatriated and handed over to the Oba of Benin. Now, the Oyo Kingdom is seeking to follow a similar path in reclaiming its lost treasures.

Oba Owoade noted that he has already begun discussions with international organisations willing to support his efforts to develop the Oyo Kingdom. He stressed that his reign would not only focus on cultural restoration but also on economic empowerment.

The monarch stated that one of his key plans is to address youth unemployment. He promised to provide vocational training to help young people acquire skills that would enable them to become self-reliant. He also assured the people that widows and widowers would receive support to improve their economic conditions.

Furthermore, Alaafin Owoade noted that he intends to build on the cultural legacy left by his predecessor, the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. He pledged to continue promoting traditional festivals such as the Sango and Oranmiyan festivals, which are significant to the Oyo people.

As part of his vision for the kingdom, the ruler revealed plans to assist university and Higher National Diploma graduates in gaining cybersecurity skills. He believes this initiative will reduce the increasing desire among young Nigerians to seek opportunities abroad.

Additionally, the Alaafin noted that improving healthcare facilities remains a top priority for his administration. He expressed his desire to leave a lasting impact in this area during his reign. “What is more, the development of health facilities has been my priority and I want to be remembered for it during my reign,” Alaafin Owoade said.
