Ekiti Woman Remanded for Allegedly Tearing Boyfriend’s Scrotum

An Ekiti State Magistrate’s Court in Ado Ekiti has ordered the remand of a 20-year-old woman, Joy Ikoja, for allegedly causing serious harm to her boyfriend, Ibrahim Usman, by tearing his scrotum during a dispute.

The incident reportedly took place at about 8:00 p.m. on April 12 in the Irona area of Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State. The police charged Ikoja to court on Tuesday, accusing her of carrying out a violent act that left her partner with injuries in his private part.

According to Inspector Adeboye Adesegun, who represented the police in court, the defendant attacked Usman in a way that is considered unlawful and dangerous under the criminal laws of the state. The prosecutor also told the court that the situation could have disturbed public peace.

Inspector Adesegun said, “The defendant did unlawfully inflict a wound on one Ibrahim Usman by tearing his scrotal sac. The defendant on the same date, time and place, did conduct herself in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace in the society.”

The court was informed that the alleged act violated several sections of the Ekiti State criminal code, including Sections 186, 255, 256(a), and 181(d) of the 2021 Criminal Laws of Ekiti State.

The prosecutor requested that bail be denied, claiming that the defendant could flee before her trial begins. However, defense counsel David Ogbede argued otherwise, saying his client deserves to be granted bail, as she is still presumed innocent by law. He assured the court that she would appear for all future proceedings if released.

Despite the plea from the defense lawyer, Magistrate Olatomiwa Daramola decided not to grant bail. The magistrate noted that the matter is serious and requires further investigation before any consideration of bail.

The court ordered that Joy Ikoja be held at the Ado Ekiti Correctional Centre until her next court appearance. The case has been scheduled to continue on April 22, when more details are expected to emerge during the hearing.
