The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, has disclosed that Adams Oshiomhole, a former Governor of Edo and current Senator, did not support the appointment of his son, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, as the state’s Commissioner for Health-designate.
This revelation comes after Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, announced the nomination of Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole for the position last Tuesday. The appointment was confirmed in a statement released by Fred Itua, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday, Idahosa emphasized Dr. Cyril’s qualifications and suitability for the role. He described Cyril as an experienced medical professional who has received both local and international training.
He stated, “Senator Adams Oshiomhole is a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and his son, like any other individual, has his own destiny. Cyril is a seasoned medical doctor. He studied in Nigeria and went on to further his studies in the United States. He is fully qualified to be in the cabinet. The fact that he is Oshiomhole’s son does not disqualify him from holding a position he is competent to manage. He will serve as Commissioner for Health based on merit.”
The deputy governor also refuted claims of nepotism, clarifying that the decision was based on merit. He stressed that Senator Adams Oshiomhole had no hand in the appointment and, in fact, opposed it.
“This position has nothing to do with Adams Oshiomhole. In fact, Adams opposed it. He was against the nomination because of the vision the governor has for the people of Edo State. The governor made the decision to appoint Cyril based on competence, not because of his father,” Idahosa explained.
Idahosa further dismissed comparisons with allegations of state capture, explaining that Governor Okpebholo’s leadership prioritizes competence and results. “What is happening in Edo State is far from state capture. It is about ensuring competence and delivering results for the people,” he noted.
