The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has officially renamed the Abuja International Conference Centre in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The centre will now be known as the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.
This announcement was made during the official commissioning of the newly renovated facility on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, in the capital city. Wike noted that the renovation marks a major upgrade of the structure, which had not undergone significant work since its construction in 1991.
“Today, this Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre can stand any other International Conference Centre,” Wike said at the event, which was attended by key government officials. He noted that the redevelopment was made possible through the efforts and support of President Tinubu and the National Assembly.
The Minister revealed that in addition to renaming the main centre after the president, several other halls within the complex were also renamed to recognise high-ranking government officials. Halls were named after Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola.
“We have named one hall Tajudeen Abbas hall, we have named Godswill Akpabio hall, and your Vice President, we have named one of these halls after the Vice President, and then the CJN, we have also named one of the halls after the CJN,” Wike said. He added that it was important to acknowledge the three arms of government that have worked together to support the FCT.
The minister also explained that the facility is now set to operate on a commercial basis. Government ministries and agencies planning to use the centre for events will be required to pay a fee. Wike noted that this measure is aimed at keeping the centre in good condition.
“How do we sustain this? I want to let everybody know, whether you’re a Ministry, whether you’re an agency, you want to use this, you have to pay something… If you want to use a place like this, such a beautiful place, then you must drop something,” he stated.
Wike noted that the project was completed within just eight months and credited the success to the leadership of President Tinubu. “Within eight months Mr President, this is what we have. And I agree that without your leadership, it wouldn’t have been possible.”
